I've got a secret....
I know who one of the upcoming EC choices is! Hah! And I'm not telling who it is:)

I will admit that I'm jealous, though. How DO you get noticed for such a wonderful thing?

E? You did it once upon a time. Remember anything special about that chapter to get it chosen?

Is it luck? Having alot of reviews? Knowing people who know people?

Or is it really based on having a kick-ass post? I'm 50/50 for wanting that to be the answer. 50% for because it should be merit-based, and 50% against because that indicates nothing I've posted has been kick-ass.

Somebody enlighten me... I've been a member for what, ten years now? Something like that. I'm sick of being invisible.

::Jumps up and down waving hands in the air like an idiot, shouting "Pick me! Pick me!"::

Yes, I'm in a zany mood right now. Finishing something as monumental as a new book is super kick-ass exhilarating. I wanna throw a party or something:) Don't think that would work considering everyone who reads this blog lives in different states.

So instead I'm bouncing around like an idiot. Good thing the kids are in bed:)

I've become hugely skeptical about EC.

I think it has an awful lot to do with taste. I've noticed how some editors pick the same people over and over again (so it has little to do with encouragement). I also notice that frequently it seems to be a haste job, where it's a submission posted in the last few days and not yet reviewed.

Or it's a submission which the editor can mercilessly tear down while keeping a friendly and impersonal voice. Do you want that? Frankly, I'd rather get something published.

You know what's bad? I never read an EC chapter or story. I figure if they're getting an EC review and being posted on the front page, they'll get enough reviews. That's kinda messed up, I suppose.

Oh, and the haste job thing I can explain. The person who is about to be EC told me she'd just taken it down when she got notified, so he has to repost it. Therefore it'll look like it's a brand new post getting chosen, even though it was chosen after being posted for a while, previously. At least, that's how I understood it.

No, that's not what I mean at all. I know that this happens.

I have very often reviewed the EC (before it becomes EC, since I don't review it after). I think becoming EC is the death of your submission, since hardly anyone will review it afterwards.

I mean that it is often (not always, though) a submission that's genuinely been posted recently and hasn't attracted a lot of reviews.

Elizabeth makes a good point about the tearing down of the submission, to which I add that I don't always agree with what is said, and I absolutely loathe the impersonal third person tone in which it is written. 'The author has demonstrated... blah blah blah' URGH!

It isn't the same as in the Del Rey days. Now the EC seems to get picked for having an interesting and readable chapter that has glaring glitches. The glitches are aired for all to see and the recipient undergoes a period of private fuming until they get over it and see the merit in a very thorough crit.

I know one now publish author, who had their worldbuilding picked apart and another, who had a talking heads chapter held up in public. My particular flaw was lack of clarity and purple prose. Yes, it was a very good and helpful crit, after I got over it.

So it's not a bad thing not to be EC? Me so confused!

:)

Just don't worry about it. It doesn't mean anything. The only thing that's good in this business is a letter that says 'we accept your story'.

I totally agree with everything you said. The EC thing is the opinion of the person reviewing and, while potentially helpful the the recipient, is held up to be helpful to the whole community.

It is much better to slide under the radar IMO.
